India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) plans to fast-track negotiations to acquire Japan's ShinMaywa US-2i amphibious search-and-rescue aircraft. Military officials said that, while the MoD is yet to despatch a tender for these platforms, the two governments are in "broad agreement" over supplying the Indian Navy (IN) with 15 of the unarmed seaplanes at a cost of around USD 1.65 billion. "The US-2i deal is being enthusiastically pursued by both governments and is likely to be concluded soon," a senior IN officer told IHS Jane's.
