Tensions over the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh have escalated recently, with the number of incidents between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces on the line of contact jumping since 20 January. The increase in violence began when Armenian officials reported that Azerbaijani forces had attempted an incursion into Armenian-held territory and killed one Armenian soldier. On 23-24 January Azerbaijan reported that an Armenian sniper had killed an Azerbaijani soldier and that Azerbaijani forces had repelled two attempted Armenian incursions and destroyed an Armenian vehicle. Baku also announced that Azerbaijani aircraft were flying along the line of contact. On 27 January Azerbaijan reported that two more soldiers had been killed by Armenian forces.
