Civilian casualties increased by nearly a quarter to 3,852 during the first half of 2013, with improvised explosive devices (lEDs) the most deadly factor. lEDs killed 443 civilians and injured 917 (35% of all civilian casualties) during the first six months of 2013: a rise of more than a third compared with 2012, according to the mid-year report on civilian casualties by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
