Senior defence officials from Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) agreed on 18 February to explore collaboration in defence equipment and technologies designed to enhance maritime security and disaster relief capabilities. The decision is further evidence of Japan's increasing willingness to test the possibilities of exporting military equipment despite the long-standing and self-imposed ban on international sales. It is also strategically significant given China's increasing assertiveness in Southeast Asian maritime domains.
