Myanmar's recent economic and political transition has been undertaken in parallel with a programme to develop military and defence industrial capabilities. Myanmar has become one of Southeast Asia's largest procurers of major military equipment over the past few years as it emerges from its long international isolation and seeks to enhance its strategic influence. In parallel with Myanmar's recent transition from a series of military dictatorships to semi-democratic governance, the country has undertaken a significant military modernisation programme.
