Combined US and South Korean forces mounted a simulated large-scale amphibious assault on three beaches in Pohang on South Korea's east coast on 31 March. The drill -which featured 9,500 US and 3,500 South Korean personnel - was the largest in 20 years. The landings were a major element of Exercise 'Ssang Yong 2014' and prefaced a week long series of joint drills by the US Marine Corps (USMC) and Republic of Korea Marine Corps (RoKMC). 'Ssang Yong' is an annual marine corps event on the Korean peninsula and loosely falls under the umbrella of the two-month-long Exercise 'Foal Eagle'.
