The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) will kick off an effort on 3 June to develop automated systems that could flip the balance in the attacker-dominated cyber realm to eventually favour defence. Currently, US military and civilian networks and internet-capable devices employ layers of autonomous firewalls, antivirus software, network sensors, and other systems to defend against threats. However, this 'defence in-depth' is little match for computer experts, who can easily find and exploit holes in the man-made software.
