The US Marine Corps (USMC) has awarded initial engineering design and development contracts to BAE Systems and SAIC for a survivabil-ity upgrade programme to extend the service lives of its ageing AAV7A1 Assault Amphibious Vehicles (AAVs). BAE Systems, the original AAV contractor, announced on 19 May that it had been awarded the contract "to develop a solution that enhances the survivability and capability" of the AAV. SAIC was also awarded a contract, and marine acquisition officials plan in mid-2015 to downselect to one contractor, USMC spokesman Manny Pacheco told IHS Jane's.
