The Iraqi government is interested in procuring surplus Army of the Czech Republic (ACR) Mil Mi-24 combat helicopters and other defence equipment to support its efforts to counter the ongoing Sunni insurgency in the country, the Czech Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed. "Iraq has expressed an en bloc interest in procuring helicopters," said Czech Defence Minister Martin Stropnicky. First Deputy Defence Minister Jiri Borovec told local media on 19 June: "We cannot rapidly withdraw aircraft that are currently in active service. However, I have authorised our LOM Praha subsidiary to negotiate [with the Iraqi government] and, if need be, refurbish the aircraft in its inventory."
