On 13 February, after a two-year absence, the Hellenic Navy resumed its participation in counter-piracy operations off the Horn of Africa, deploying its MEKO 200HN Hydra-class frigate HS Psara in support of the European Union's Operation 'Atalanta'. Speaking to IHS Jane's, Vice Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis, chief of the Hellenic Navy, said the temporary withdrawal from participation was one example of austerity measures undertaken by the service in the face of Greece's financial situation. "Since the onset of the crisis, the Hellenic Navy signalled its determination to preserve the core capabilities critical for the accomplishment of our primary mission: defending the territorial integrity and sovereign rights [of Greece]," he said.
