The Russian Ministry of Defence said it is aiming to substitute 95% of Ukrainian imports with goods from other sources within two to five years. The comments from Deputy Defence Minister Yuri Borisov - carried by the RIA Novosti Russian state information service on 24 June - follow a more general pledge on import substitution that was made by Moscow earlier this year. The termination of formerly deep-rooted defence industrial ties between the countries was prompted first by the ousting of former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych and then by the unilateral declaration of independence by the Crimea region and the rise of separatist movements in the east of Ukriane.
