The European defence aviation industry has a difficult decision to make: it can continue working with national governments and enjoy some associated benefits, or it can distance itself entirely and operate as a number of purely private concerns. This decision would differ between companies because there is no single ownership model, which spans the spectrum from BAE Systems (wholly private) via Airbus (indirect government ownership), to Finmeccanica and Thales (about 30% direct state ownership). To further complicate matters, these and other companies hold stakes in each other and in third-party joint ventures, while non-European businesses have considerable assets. Clearly, the notion of a contiguous European aerospace industry is not without complications.
