As a result of the Ukraine crisis "the emphasis of people [in government] has changed", believes Ian King, who has served as chief executive officer of BAE Systems since 2008. "The predictability of this sector and the capabilities that governments have required have always been quite long term," King told IHS Jane's. Western governments, in particular, have in recent years focused on countering asymmetric threats, borne of their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade, he noted. While King does not believe the Ukraine crisis will lead to a significant increase in defence budgets, he does think that "people are going to become less [narrowly] focused, be more mindful of the broad spectrum of capabilities they need".
