The importance of engaging regional stakeholders in the Southeast Asian subregion will only grow in the future with the US 'rebalance' to Asia Pacific, which will see the US Navy (USN) relocating 60% of its assets to the region by 2020, according to Rear Admiral Cynthia Thebaud, outgoing commander of both Logistics Group Western Pacific (COMLOG WESTPAC) and Combined Task Force 73, based in Singapore's Sem-bawang Terminal. From August 2013 to 1 July 2014 Adm Thebaud oversaw the logistics and maintenance support of all ships operating in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR): a vast stretch of ocean covering over 48 million square miles stretching from the mid-Pacific to the east coast of Africa and from the Kuril Islands in the north to the Antarctic in the south.
