At the outset of Operation 'Protective Edge', the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) focused on suppressing Palestinian rocket fire from the Gaza Strip. By the 24th day of the operation, the destruction of the tunnels that militants have dug into Israel had become the IDF's primary objective. "We have so far neutralised dozens of terror tunnels and we are determined to complete this task," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on 31 July. "Therefore, I will not agree to any ceasefire that does not enable the IDF to complete this very important task."
