The US airstrikes to defend Iraqi Kurdistan from Islamic State (IS) militants have attracted considerable attention in recent weeks, but the main IS focus is on unifying its areas of operation in northern Syria and Iraq. Following the IS's capture of Mosul on 10 June and its offensive across much of Iraq during the following months, its push northwards from Mosul into Sinjar on 3 August appeared to present an imminent threat to Arbil. This apparent threat was emphasised on 7 August, when IS forces captured Makhmur, approximately 25 km west of Kirkuk and 40 km southwest of Arbil, together with the Mosul Dam on 7 August.
