The situation in east Ukraine "has changed radically", Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on 28 August. Anti-Kiev forces have launched counter-offensives apparently involving Russian regular forces along three axis that have seen the capture of the southeastern towns of Novoaz-ovsk, Marinivka, and Uspenka, which placed the strategic port of Mariupol on the Azov Sea under threat at the time JDW went to press.
