摘要

For the last decade the US Army has been at the forefront of incorporating the tactical advantages offered by sensors mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into battlefield operations. The establishment of Task Force ODIN (Observe, Detect, Identify, and Neutralize) in 2006 to help detect and counter insurgent operators of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Iraq provided a starting point for bringing unmanned systems into frontline combat units. From there, the link to making unmanned aerial systems (UASs) a component of every combat aviation brigade's (CAB's) composition quickly developed as the battlefield changed from the deserts and urban fighting of Iraq to the urban and mountainous geography of Afghanistan. The persistent stare and long loiter of UAVs thus supplemented, rather than replaced, the rotary-wing missions inherent in US Army CABs.
