G/ATOR's story reaches back to the early 2000s, when the U.S. Marine Corps was faced with the need to replace a fleet of six radar types, many of which were ageing. Proposing a single, multi-mission system, Northrop Grumman was awarded a development contract for what became G/ATOR in 2007. Now the radar is replacing five legacy systems that are operated by various segments of the Marine Corps force.
