Ghana's President, John Dram-ani Mahama, commissioned four new Mi-171Sh combat transport helicopters on 5 January, saying the acquisition would help the military protect the territorial waters of Ghana and contribute to peacekeeping operations. The Mi-171 Sh has armour to increase crew protection and can be armed with a variety of weapons. Mahama also inaugurated a new helicopter maintenance facility at Accra Air Force Base and promised that his government would provide the funding needed to keep the new aircraft flying.
