The Italian Navy is retiring 30 frontline and support vessels between 2012 and 2018, while receiving only 8 new vessels in the period to replace them, the navy's 2012 yearly report, published on 25 January, details.The report also unveils details of the navy's efforts to streamline infrastructure and enact a significant, longer-term personnel reduction plan. The "Italian Navy has accelerated force contractions and command streamlining to become a more effective, reliable, and sustainable force", said the naval Chief of Staff, Admiral Luigi Binelli Mantelli, who on 25 January was promoted to head of the Italian armed forces with effect from 31 January.
