Providing the US Department of Defense (DoD) with more leeway to make budget cuts, instead of an across-the-board reduction, would not much ease 'sequestration' because the Pentagon is too far into the fiscal year and too much is off limits, according to Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter.If sequestration is implemented on 1 March the DoD believes it would need to reduce the funding it had planned to have available for the rest of this fiscal year by USD46 billion, Carter told the Senate Armed Services Committee on 12 February.
