The US Army now has dedicated forces in the Pacific following 12 years of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, but work must still be done to strengthen the service's Pacific capabilities and to build an understanding of its roles, according to officials at the Association of the US Army's inaugural Land Power in the Pacific (LANPAC) symposium in Honolulu, Hawaii. Even with the increased army focus and newly dedicated forces in the region, US Pacific Command (PACOM) - which is in charge of the military's actions in the area and oversees US Army Pacific (ARPAC) - is at times still struggling to grasp the army's role in the theatre.
