The US Navy's (USN's) top officer announced on 8 April that a solid-state laser weapon (SSL) will be installed and deployed to 5th Fleet on board USS Ponce in early 2014. A quick reaction capability based upon the Laser Weapon System (LaWS), developed by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), is being configured for an extended deployment of at least several months on board Ponce, which is currently forward deployed as the USN's afloat forward staging base in the Gulf region, officials said.
