South Africa has announced it will withdraw its remaining forces from the Central African Republic (CAR) after the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) failed to take a hard line against the Seleka rebel alliance that ousted President Frangois Bozize when it captured the capital Bangui in March. In an extraordinary session in Chad on 3 April, ECCAS decided not to recognise Seleka as the new government of the CAR and called on it to accept a neutral interim president pending elections within 18 months, an offer refused by Seleka. After the meeting, President Jacob Zuma stated South Africa would immediately withdraw its remaining personnel - as few as 18 looking after the equipment still at Bangui airport - from the CAR.
