The Spanish government has announced it is cutting its key defence re-equipment budget over the coming years by EUR3.85 billion (USD5 billion), with aircraft programmes particularly hard hit. The biggest cuts relate to the air force, which will see 14 of its 87 Eurofighter Typhoons under order cancelled to save EUR2.9 billion. There will also be cuts to the number kept operational to save on maintenance, Secretary of State for Defence Pedro Argueelles told Congress on 23 May.
