The US Department of State said it still intends to secure a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to protect worldwide facilities in high threat areas, even as President Barack Obama's administration comes under scrutiny for its handling of embassy security and UAV policies. The department first released a pre-solicitation notice in September 2011 for a five-year, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract worth as much as USD1 billion to provide low- and high-altitude UAVs. The contractor would own the UAVs and would provide pilots, navigators, analysts, support, and maintenance.
