Bulgaria's programme to acquire multirole fighter aircraft will be frozen until at least the end of the year as a result of national budget constraints, Defence Minister Angel Naydenov announced to the country's parliament on 5 June. Naydenov said it would be "highly inappropriate" to commence the acquisition process given the economic challenges facing the country and the recent news that the state budget deficit had reached a higher-than-expected BGN1 billion (USD668 million).
