The US Army and Boeing have signed a long-awaited USD4 billion five-year contract that includes orders for 177 CH-47F Chinook cargo helicopters. The deal was agreed in December 2012, but the multi-year contract could not be signed until a defence appropriations bill was in place and such legislation was finally enacted in March 2013. A baseline for the arrange-ment included 155 aircraft - 31 newly built platforms and 124 'renew' aircraft that are constructed with a new airframe and some refurbished components - but options were immediately exercised for 22 more Chinooks. The contract has options for 60 aircraft beyond the 155, for 215 CH-47Fs possible in total, a Boeing spokesman told IHS Jane's.
