European missile house MBDA has demonstrated "the world's first surface-to-surface salvo engagement of multiple fast inshore attack craft [FIAC] threats with a single button push", the company announced at Le Bourget. The engagement, which took place on 29 May at the West Freugh range in Scotland, involved three millimetric wave (MMW) operational Brimstone missiles being launched in a rapid salvo from a triple-rail launcher located on a jack-up platform. The targets were a simulated attack formation of five representative FIACs, the centre vessel of which was moving at around 20 knots, at a range of 4-5 km (constrained by range safety) in sea state 3. The three missiles independently acquired and engaged their respective targets, scoring direct hits that resulted in extensive structural damage to the three vessels engaged. The weapon system in its anti-FIAC guise is being marketed as 'Brimstone Sea Spear'.
