While the geography may be poised to change dramatically, the US military's strategic shift from Afghanistan and Iraq to the Asia Pacific region has not altered the thrust of the US Marine Corps' (USMC's) technology development efforts, according to Brigadier General Mark Wise, the outgoing commander of the Marine Corps Warf ighting Laboratory (MCWL). He says that equipping individual marines to operate in small, forward-deployed units has remained a top priority. For the past two years Gen Wise has focused on developing technology for 'distributed operations': the ability to sustain individual marines at the company level at forward locations. The strategic pivot simply means that, rather than operating at a distance from a forward operating base (FOB), as is often the case in Afghanistan, marines in future conflicts may operate some distance from a sea base in dramatically different weather and geographical conditions.
