From harmonised military requirements to dual-use capability developments, the 27 EU countries are quietly struggling over a nascent industrial policy to support their defence sector and bolster the EU's anaemic common security and defence policy (CSDP). Whatever the vicissitudes of the current financial crisis, the nations must plunge ahead together in this direction, say EU and national officials. "What we are heading for is a new CSDP that clearly sets up the future for European efence," said Philippe Brunet, head of the security and defence sectors unit at the European Commission's policy department for enterprise and industry. Brunet was among many panelists who addressed the annual security and defence policy conference in Brussels on 27 June.
