A key element of the United States' ballistic missile defence system has failed yet another intercept test during a 5 July event. The Ground-based Mid-course Defense (GMD) system - designed to defend against limited long-range ballistic missile attacks - has not seen a successful intercept test since 2008, when a Capability Enhancement I (CE-I) Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle (EKV) was deployed from the interceptor and struck its ballistic missile target.
