The United States has cut the number of available Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) pilot conversion slots on the Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft from six to two, potentially leading to a shortage of pilots in the long term. This creates challenges for the RNoAF as it requires a minimum of five F-16 pilot conversions annually to maintain its long-term pool of pilots. If left unchecked, it could also compli- cate the transition from the F-16 to the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter when the jets start to arrive in numbers around 2017. However, F-35 pilot education will be separate and not directly affected.
