The ongoing fighting in Syria and continued upheaval in the Middle East, coupled with Iran's nuclear ambitions, have put Israel in a combative position as it prepares for conflicts it fears could erupt without warning. An example of the future wars Israel foresees was provided in May when the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) held a nationwide civil-defence drill. The primary scenario simulated the firing of thousands of missiles - long and short range - into the country. "Israel is the country most threatened by rockets and missiles in the world," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said during the drill. "Over the years we have significantly improved our defences and shelters ... but it will be impossible to be completely protected and no defence can replace the overwhelming force of the IDF."
