Turkey's former chief of the general staff (CGS) General II-ker Basbug (rtd), and 16 other defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment by an Istanbul court on 5 August on charges of plotting a military coup, among a total of 254 personnel convicted. The Ergenekon network, dubbed "an armed terrorist organisation", plotted to overthrow the government of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the court ruled. The sentences come after more than five years of trials that have seen retired officers, journalists, academics, lawyers, writers, politicians, security chiefs, and criminal figures all in the dock.
