Minnagh Air Base in northern Syria was finally captured by Islamist militants on 5 August after a siege lasting since October 2012: a victory that will allow the insurgents to redeploy their forces on other fronts. The base has been effectively cut off from other government-controlled areas since the siege gained traction in early 2013; Syrian military aircraft had to parachute supplies to the defenders as it became too dangerous for them to land at the base.
