The first of the UK Royal Navy's (RN's) Vanguard-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) will begin its Life Extension (LIFEX) programme in 2015 as part of a planned deep maintenance period at Babcock's Devonport dockyard. HMS Vanguard will be the first of the four Vanguard-class boats to commence the LIFEX programme. This is intended to extend the boats' service life to enable the RN to maintain continuous at-sea deterrence (CASD) until the planned Successor boats enter service.
