The US Air Force's (USAF's) QF-16 target drone made its maiden unmanned flight on 19 September: a sign that the USAF's F-16 Fighting Falcon fleet is starting to show its age. The QF-16 is the latest in a long line of aircraft to be resurrected in an unmanned configuration to be used for target practice on the range at Tyndall Air Force Base (AFB) in Florida. The USAF's target drones provide an opportunity for fighter pilots to cut their teeth flying against realistic aerial threats. Major weapon systems - such as air-to-air missiles - are also tested against the drones before they are certified for use.
