The first of three 'Project Khareef corvettes built by BAE Systems for the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) conducted Oman's first live firing of the MBDA VL-MICA point defence missile system, en route from the UK to the Said bin Sultan Naval Base. RNOV Al-Shamikh was officially welcomed into the RNO on 6 October in an inauguration ceremony at the base in Wudam. Built by BAE Systems Maritime-Naval Ships at its Portsmouth shipyard in the UK, Al-Shamikh had achieved interim acceptance at a ceremony in Portsmouth on 26 June 2013.
