The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is confident that it will be able to destroy Syria's chemical weapons capability by the deadlines laid down by its Executive Council if the security situation on the ground does not disrupt the work of the inspectors. "This is an extraordinary situation for the OPCW," Director-General Ahmet Uzumcu said in a 9 October press briefing. "There are significant challenges. Nevertheless our organisation is well equipped in terms of knowledge and expertise to fulfil this mandate."
