Australia and Sweden are close to completing a final agreement on intellectual property (IP) associated with the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's) fleet of Swedish-designed Collins-class submarines, informed sources told IHS Jane's at the Pacific 2013 International Maritime Conference on 7 October. This will clear the way for work to proceed on an evolution of the Collins design as the alternative to a completely new design for the Future Submarine successor to the six-strong Collins-class fleet, the current life of type of which expires around 2025.
