Although homeland security remains the primary mission of the Royal Swedish Navy (RSwN), its ships and personnel are increasingly engaged in more demanding overseas tasks. Rear Admiral Jan Thornqvist, Chief of Staff for the RSwN, acknowledged that the Swedish government's decision to play a more active role on the international stage has tested the service. "Although this decision didn't have a comprehensive effect on the navy's structure, it did on our naval doctrine," he told IHS Jane's.
