The final hull section of the first of the UK Royal Navy's future Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers has been lowered into place, marking a key milestone for the construction programme, officials have announced. The hull of Queen Elizabeth was officially completed after the 130-tonne, 6 m-high front section of the carrier's ski ramp was fitted into place at BAE Systems' Rosyth facility in Scotland on 10 November. Only the aircraft lifts and radar need to be added to complete outward construction of the 65,000-tonne carrier. "Now our focus turns towards fitting Queen Elizabeth with the sensitive electronics and systems she will need," BAE Systems said. Under current scheduling Queen Elizabeth will be launched in mid-2014, with sea trials earmarked to start in late 2016 and entry into service expected in 2017.
