The US House of Representatives on 12 December voted in approval of a bipartisan budget deal that, among other things, would ease the effect of 'sequestration' on US national defence funding over the next two years by USD31.7 billion. The budget legislation increases discretionary spending for fiscal year 2014 and FY 2015 by raising the caps for discretionary 'national defence' budget authority to USD520.5 billion in FY 2014 and USD521.4 billion in FY 2015. Those budget caps were mandated by the 2011 Budget Control Act's sequestration mechanism, which went into effect in March 2013 after Congress and the White House failed to agree upon debt-cutting measures.
