The UK Royal Navy's (RN's) most senior officer has reaffirmed the importance of the Type 26 surface combatant to the service's future force structure. Describing the Type 26 frigate as "without doubt my number one equipment priority", First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope said he expected the programme to deliver a package offering "wide utility, flexibility and agility". BAE Systems Maritime, the designated lead ship contractor and systems integrator, is leading a four-year Assessment Phase programme under a GBP127 million (USD200 million) contract awarded by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in March 2010. Current plans assume the Type 26 will replace the RN's 13 Type 23 frigates on a one-for-one basis from 2021.
