Four bidders were downselected by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) on 31 January to compete for a GBP950 million (USD1.5 billion) contract to run military training areas across the UK. The contract is the first of a series being developed and procured under the DIO's Next Generation Estate Contracts (NGEC) programme, which it hopes will eventually be rolled out from April 2013 across its estate of 240,000 hectares and 45,000 buildings. The first phase of the programme, dubbed the National Training Estate Prime contract, could be worth up to GBP950 million over its 10-year life, covers around 200,000 hectares and will provide services ranging from managing firing ranges to providing laundry services.
