In an ideal world, NATO's missile defence plan to protect its territory against ballistic missile threats should be a technocratic exercise of linking the alliance's newly proven short-range theatre missile defence (TMD) command-and-control (C2) software to the vastly larger C2 architecture of the United States' long-range missile defence system to produce a transatlantic situation al picture and common fire button. However, missile technology is anything but simple and underlying the relatively straightforward technical aspects of missile defence are various allied political, legal, geographic and budgetary issues whose intertwined complexity casts a pall of ambiguity over the project's timelines and eventual outcome.
