The Austrian Armed Forces (Bundesheer) are being forced to accept another EUR571 million (USD744 million) of funding cuts by 2016 as part of a wider package of austerity measures. Confirmed unopposed by Defence Minister Norbert Darabos (SPOE) on 15 February, the cuts came as part of a broader package of government cuts announced on 10 February in response to the downgrading of Austria's credit rating by Standard and Poor's last month from AAA to AA+ status with a negative outlook.
