A combination of internal and external security threats, the need to maintain parity with regional peers and a commitment to recapitalise inventories following long periods of underinvestment have served to drive spending in Latin America.Economic growth - fuelled in part by external demand for the continents' natural resources and agricultural output - has served to underwrite procurement cheques. Governments across the region are also using military investment to drive economic transformation and social reform through the revitalisation of national industries and the channelling of procurement funds into employment opportunities for populations.
